The Columbia River Gorge is bursting with lush green foliage and thundering waterfalls that offer landscape photographers infinite photo opportunities.

Recommended Equipment

  • Camera with an interchangeable lens
  • A *sturdy* tripod with a ball head. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have a solid tripod. Many people spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses, and mount their gear on a flimsy $60 tripod. If you invested money in a camera, don’t risk damaging it by putting it on a tripod that won’t stand up to wind and weather!
  • Shutter release (recommended but not essential)
  • Extra batteries (Essential)
  • A change of shoes if you get wet feet
  • Rain cover for your camera
  • A circular polarizer
  • Lots of lens wipes and cloths

We meet at 7PM at the Thunder Island Brewery in Cascade Locks, where we can enjoy some tasty beers from local microbreweries.

Bring your camera so that we can dial in the ideal settings for the next mornings shoot. If you’d like to bring your portfolio I’d be delighted to do a review and offer any helpful advice and tips.

Day 1 – Get Your Green On

  • Morning shoot at Elowah Falls
  • Break for lunch
  • Afternoon shoot at Panther Creek Falls
  • Evening Shoot at Multnomah Falls with Model
  • Group Dinner – Beers and Burgers

Day 2  – Chasing Light Rays

  • Morning Shoot at Punchbowl Falls
  • Afternoon Shoot at Oneonta Gorge
  • Afternoon Shoot at Hole in the Wall Falls
  • Group Dinner – Beers, Burgers and fond farewells

Where to Stay and Getting Around

The most convenient place to stay in the Gorge to shoot waterfalls is in Cascade Locks. There are only 2 hotels in Cascade Locks – the Best Western, and the Columbia George Inn. Most people prefer to stay at the Best Western. If you prefer more upscale accommodations there’s also the Skamania Lodge just across the river.

You’ll need a vehicle to get to all of the locations. If you would like to carpool I can try my best to accommodate but please note that transportation is not included in the workshop.
