Winter is Coming… and with it, the beauty of ice and snow! Join me this winter for my Banff Photography Workshop – Winter Nights!

There is nothing more surreal than the stillness of a postcard perfect winter night in the Rocky Mountains, except for maybe photographing its icy beauty. In this one night Banff Photography Workshop, I will take you to some of the most inspiring locations for night photography, and lead you through a variety of night photography concepts.

On the Banff Photography Workshop – Winter Nights, I will cover everything from the basics of focusing at night, exposure, and white balance, to more creative techniques such as light painting, and adding the human element to you photos. There will be a model on hand to help us create some dreamy images, as well as various types of lighting to work with. So whether you are a beginner or an advanced night photographer, the Winter Nights Photography Workshop can help you to take your night photography to the next level.

Milky Way Editing TutorialAlso included in the Banff Photography Workshop – Winter Nights is a FREE copy of my ‘Timeless Photography Tutorial Video’ which covers my entire work flow for editing night images. The editing tutorial includes every thing from my camera settings, to combining multiple exposures, and making the stars pop out of your image. The editing tutorial will help you to make the most out of the brilliant shots you get during the workshop.

Photography Equipment for the Banff Photography Workshop – Winter Nights

  • A digital camera (don’t forget your memory cards and charger!)
  • A *sturdy* tripod with a ball head. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have a solid tripod. Many people spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses, and mount their gear on a flimsy $60 tripod. If you invested money in a camera, don’t risk damaging it by putting it on a tripod that won’t stand up to wind and weather!
  • Spare batteries for your camera (especially if you’re a Sony shooter!)
  • Warm, insulating layers. It can get cold in the mountains, so dress in warm layers!
  • A wide angle lens
  • Recommended:
    • A camera remote
    • Ice cleats to go over your boots
    • Hand warmers for inside gloves

How to Get There and Where to Stay

Banff is located about an hour and a half drive from Calgary. Most travelers will fly into Calgary airport and drive to Banff.

Winter is a good time to travel to the Rockies, as summer tourism is long forgotten. That means that hotels will have low season pricing, and we won’t have to push too many other tripods out of the way to get our shots! 😉 A quick search on Hotels.com or Expedia.ca should give you many options for accommodation, but book early to get the best rates. You can also stay in Canmore – only 18 kms from Banff, and often has better rates.

Banff Photography Workshop

You’ll need a vehicle to get to all of the locations. If you would like to carpool we can try our best to help but please note that transportation is not included in the workshop.
